Artémed is an association founded in France in 2001 to develop artistic, creative and cultural exchange in the visual arts and beyond, particularly with the countries of the Mediterranean.

The MétaNation sets up in Beirut, at Zico House.

The MétaNation is an idealistic vision of a world beyond nations, built up gradually as its community, values and culture grow. Through a process of pollination, the MétaNation takes shape by bringing subtle transformations to shared thinking and practices.

It is represented by an Embassy that facilitates its cross-border life as a “meta-manoeuvring” institution. The Embassy holds an integration ritual to form a supportive, multilingual community of Representatives of the MétaNation.

The Embassy team uses a set of cards, called the KIT, to conduct Test-Interviews leading to the MétaNation Document, a self-official and non-classifying document.

The Test-Interviews may or may not be recorded, and anonymity is always guaranteed. These sound recordings are processed at each stop of the Embassy in order to bring the MétaNation closer to its ideal, from the local to the global level. They also feed the MétaStatistik, an integral part of the Anarchives of the Embassy of the MétaNation, which are open to the public. These Anarchives share theoretical resources, accounts of micropolitical experiments, counter-documentary videos, conceptual journeys and unlikely encounters, among other things.

The Embassy of the MétaNation mandates the NIP (Nonsense International Program) to carry out “educational missions” and performances imbued with humour.

It often organises impromptu ceremonies such as a communal cooking pot, a plant-based banquet or a free zone. It can also invite associations or friendly Embassies, such as the Embassy of the Commons, to hold workshop-debates on metanational notions or to initiate eco-social practices.

An ARTEMED co-production

Artémed sets out to develop its activities in the following ways:

  • Reflecting aspects of the art of these regions in today’s context
  • Fostering intercultural encounters
  • Bringing the work of artists from these countries to a wider public
  • Broadening the audience for the art of today

“Let me stress once again that there is no single Mediterranean culture – there are several within one Mediterranean. They are marked by traits that are at once alike and different, seldom united and never identical. Their similarities arise from the closeness of a shared sea and from the meeting, on its shores, of neighbouring nations and forms of expression. Their differences are shaped by origins and history, by beliefs and customs. Neither the similarities nor the differences are absolute or constant. Sometimes the former prevail, sometimes the latter. The rest is mythology.”

Predrag Matvejević (preface to La pensée méridienne by Franco Cassano)

“Where there is art, there is neither old age, nor loneliness, nor sickness, and even death is no more than half of itself.”

Anton Chekhov
