Artémed is an association founded in France in 2001 to develop artistic, creative and cultural exchange in the visual arts and beyond, particularly with the countries of the Mediterranean.

Caroline PouzollesNovember - December 2002

Artémed met Caroline Pouzolles through encounters between the French and Lebanese artistic communities in Paris, which led to her stay in Beirut.

Her work as a visual artist – made from raw and salvaged materials, incorporating electronics and audiovisual elements – and her choreographic performances found a strong response in Beirut, at Zico House, one of the city’s most unconventional cultural venues.

She collaborated on happenings, notably with musicians from the “Mill” (Musiques Improvisées Libres du Liban – Free Improvised Music of Lebanon) and a Lebanese dancer.

She also led a hands-on visual arts workshop for a small group of participants.

The residency continued at “Instants Chavirés” (Montreuil, France) with a visual and musical performance by Caroline Pouzolles together with the musicians Sharif Sehnaoui, Mazen Kerbaj and others.

Exhibition from 3 to 12 December, Zico House, 5 pm to 9 pm

fff is an in situ and interactive work by Caroline Pouzolles, created from sounds, materials and encounters made in Beirut.

The constructions are fitted with contact microphones: sensors that turn material vibrations into a very weak electrical current, which is then amplified to become sound.

Evening of performances, 10 December, 8 pm, Zico House, pay what you wish

Lebanese actors, dancers and musicians are invited to use the work as a kind of super-stage, sensitive to their movements. Musicians can also intervene by processing the sound sources or adding their instrumental improvisations to the sounds of the installation.

Workshops

  • Workshop 1: « Matières à penser » (Food for Thought), 21 to 24 November, 6–9 pm
  • Workshop 2: « L’art comme expérience » (Art as Experience), 6 to 8 December, 1–5 pm

Artémed sets out to develop its activities in the following ways:

  • Reflecting aspects of the art of these regions in today’s context
  • Fostering intercultural encounters
  • Bringing the work of artists from these countries to a wider public
  • Broadening the audience for the art of today

“Let me stress once again that there is no single Mediterranean culture – there are several within one Mediterranean. They are marked by traits that are at once alike and different, seldom united and never identical. Their similarities arise from the closeness of a shared sea and from the meeting, on its shores, of neighbouring nations and forms of expression. Their differences are shaped by origins and history, by beliefs and customs. Neither the similarities nor the differences are absolute or constant. Sometimes the former prevail, sometimes the latter. The rest is mythology.”

Predrag Matvejević (preface to La pensée méridienne by Franco Cassano)

“Where there is art, there is neither old age, nor loneliness, nor sickness, and even death is no more than half of itself.”

Anton Chekhov
