“WORLD CITIES”

Theme of the residencies for Mediterranean artists
in PARIS – 2023/2024

Artémed, a cultural association based in Paris, chose the theme of these “Parisian residencies” for visual artists of Mediterranean nationality in order to question the notions of “world cities” and “cities of refuge”.

The world’s great cities are a melting pot of human thought, activity and achievement. They are places of encounter and crossroads, where the great opportunities for human, social, societal, architectural, urban, artistic and cultural achievement are to be found.
Like those of Paris or the Mediterranean basin, they are also open doors to foreigners from every horizon and to experiences of all kinds.

They offer the greatest professional and other opportunities and bring together human enterprises of every kind, large and small. They thus attract people from neighbouring regions, from the provinces and from other countries, in search of an “elsewhere” full of promise.

These great cities are also “cities of refuge” for intellectuals, artists, political opponents, and people from other countries or cities fleeing conflict, who seek a measure of security there and plan short or long stays in a peaceful, reassuring setting.

This artist residency asks participants to create works inspired by the city that evoke the “urban fact” or “urban making” in their physical, plastic, material, spiritual, human, psychological and social dimensions…

The works will be presented in exhibitions in Paris and Beirut, “world cities” par excellence.

Paris, November 2022

Artémed sets out to develop its activities in the following ways:

  • Reflecting aspects of the art of these regions in today’s context
  • Fostering intercultural encounters
  • Bringing the work of artists from these countries to a wider public
  • Broadening the audience for the art of today

“Let me stress once again that there is no single Mediterranean culture – there are several within one Mediterranean. They are marked by traits that are at once alike and different, seldom united and never identical. Their similarities arise from the closeness of a shared sea and from the meeting, on its shores, of neighbouring nations and forms of expression. Their differences are shaped by origins and history, by beliefs and customs. Neither the similarities nor the differences are absolute or constant. Sometimes the former prevail, sometimes the latter. The rest is mythology.”

Predrag Matvejević (preface to La pensée méridienne by Franco Cassano)

“Where there is art, there is neither old age, nor loneliness, nor sickness, and even death is no more than half of itself.”

Anton Chekhov
